How to Perform Accurate Keyword Popularity Research – 1c

Advertisements

keyword popularity researchIn the previous post, you have learn the difference between the broad, phrase and exact searches.

This post will teach you about the popularity of a keyword and check if it is heavily optimized by other websites.

It is much easier to rank for a keyword that is not optimized than one that is highly optimized by other webpages, am i correct?

Which keyword will you choose?

Given the choice of  Keyword A that has 100,000 searches per month but is heavily optimized by other websites and Keyword B that has only 1000 searches per month, but is not optimized at all.

Which one will you choose?

I take Keyword B anytime over Keyword A. With keyword B i have 95% confidence to rank in the top 3 spots of google with less work done which will give me about 80% of the searches per month. While for Keyword A, i might be struggling to get the 500th spot. which will not get me a single trickle of traffic.

In search engine marketing, this phrase holds true - I rather be a Big size fish in a small pond that to be an average size fish in an ocean.

What happen if you fail to perform proper keyword popularity research?

You may be at #1 spot in google for a keyword, but if your keyword has less than 100 searches monthly, be prepared to get ZERO traffic!

Even if you found a keyword that has 1 million searches If your keyword is ranking is not on page 1 or 2, be prepared to receive ZERO traffic too!

How do we know which keywords are popular yet have low competition?

After reading the previous post on broad, phrase or exact match, Difference between Board, Phrase and Exact Match Searches. By now you shouldhave a to find out the difference between the 3 kind of searches available in google.

Here is the step by step guide.

Step 1) Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Step 2) Key in any keyword you wish to search for. example “dog training” using Exact search.

dog training phrase search

Step 4) Let go to google and type in the same keyword dog training, this time in quotes “dog training” (this is called phrase search) (everything in red goes into the search box) As above, you can see that it has 5.37million webpages with the word “dog training”

dog training intitle phrase search

Step 5) Here is where it gets a little bit complicated. Now type this into the intitle:”dog training” (yes, everything in red, just copy and paste) and you should see the results showing 3.92million websites!

What this command does was to search websites that have the phrase “dog training” in their title.

Step 6) Do the same for inurl:”dog training” and inanchor:”dog training” This will respectively bring out websites with the phrase dog training in their URL and anchor text.

Finally and of course, you should collect the data and compile in a spread sheet.

Usually, i deem a keyword as easy to rank if the results for intitle and inurl are less than 100 and inanchor results are less than 300, and websites results’ are less than 5,000

Anything more, you have to put in some efforts in doing social bookmarking and creating backlinks.

For anything more than 1000 for results from inurl and intitle, i will advise you to find other keyword to rank for. Keyword competition is too strong for you to rank in the top page.

What does intitle, inurl and inanchor means?

Intitle : Check if your keyword is in the title

Inurl : check if your keyword is in the URL

Inanchor : check if your keyword is written as the anchor text, which is equivalent to backlinks.

By having your keyword in the title of your webpage and in the url, you are doing SEO for the keyword. Pages with keyword in the title and url usually ranks higher than those without the keyword in the title and url. Hence, the lesser webpages with the keywords in the title and URL, the lesser your competition is, and this makes it even easier for you to get high ranking for your desired keyword.

Long  Tail Keyword Popularity Research

long tail keyword popularity researchMost of the time, i will recommend you to use a long tail keyword rather than a short tail keyword to achieve lesser competition.

A long tail keyword is a keyword that keyword phrase that contains more than 3 words. Compare this, do a search on google for “dog training” and “small puppy dog training” Which has lesser competition? And with lesser competition, you stand a highher chance of ranking in page 1 of your keyword.

Of course, take a look at the searches per month for the keyword. You certainly do not want to rank #1 for a keyword that no one inputs into the search engine!
